  1. hi, i'm getting a bit annoyed with this blog. my sister is on this expedition and there has been no update since they left Leh. how are they getting on? is everybody ok? is there any communication at all with them? i think on behalf of everybody who is missing their family and friends the blog should be updated.

  2. hi, i agree with your comment, my daughter is on the expedition too, its bad enough having no contact, the only reassurance we had was reading the weekly blog.Any idea when the communication problem will be resolved?

  3. I have to agree as well if they had contact with you then surely you would have updated there blog for them so i can only guess that you have no contact with them at all so how can you tell us there fine?

  4. Perhaps if there is no contact you could tell us what they are likely to be up to based on previous expeditions? If their equipment's not working I wouldn't want them to get distracted or lose time finding more, the expedition is for them not us.

  5. true, the expedition is for them and not us but only natural concerns grow when no contact is made. my sister was very excited but also understandably slightly apprehensive so a little reassurance surely to family and friends would be gratefully received.

  6. I do agree, I made the comment and I've been a bit frustrated myself that nothing further has been posted, even if it's the UK office again with another re-assuring post or a little more info to at least give us something different to look at while we wait.

  7. out of curiosity what contact do you have with the group and is anything being done to make contact with them? or are we going to have to wait to there in leh again?

  8. Hi, i agree i do feel concerned as a parent also.I am also anxious and feel quite let down by the lack of news. I can't believe that nothing can be done to reassure us parents. The lack of communication is very bad and needs to be addressed Jamie.

  9. I also agree with all thats said. All the other expaeditions seem to have a lot of news and indepth info as to where they are, so come on BSE you got our loved ones. At least tell us something. Please.

  10. Dear all

I am a staff member at BSES and have just returned from visiting our Amazon expedition. I appreciate your concerns, but would like to emphasise that communications equipment can be temperamental in our remote locations and it is common to not be able to receive updates of any detail from the field. Indeed it is unusual that the comms on the other expeditions have so far worked so well.

BSES takes a considerable amount of comms equipment with us on expeditions. There is daily interaction between the expedition base camp team and any groups away from base camp, and BSES HQ receives a satellite phone update once a week within a specified time window to confirm that all is well. Staff members are also on call permanently in the case of an emergency. Satellite phone calls are kept short as signal can be very temperamental. I can assure you that the office maintains this contact with the expedition throughout the time they are away.

Our other method of update is by satellite email which is again dependent on satellite signal and can be unreliable. This is the reason we have not received substantial updates from the expedition so far. This problem is common (I also experienced this in the Amazon) and not cause for concern as the email is secondary to the satellite phones and somewhat of a luxury for our expeditions.

I would like to point out that this is the first year we have had official blogs running for our trips, and diary updates etc are a privilege we encourage, but do not guarantee. We aim to update the blog once a week to report that the expedition has called in and that all is well, and so far this been done.

We appreciate your patience in this matter and hope to update the blog with more information once we have our weekly call in.

  11. I think that is really helpful to put it in perspective (thanks Dorothy). I think we should see the blog as a bonus when it comes through rather than getting worried about it when it doesn't. We know our young explorers are in good hands otherwise we would never have let them go in the first place. That said, in its place when it can't be done it would still be nice to have a rough idea of what they might be doing from London.

  12. Hi Dorothy, Thank you for your detaied explanation. I know my child is in good hands and look forward to a detailed account once you have any news. I am sure that peoples comments are not a direct attack on yourselves but more a feeling of frustration and concern. Please keep up the good work.

  13. When you think about it they are in one of the most remote places in the world. No PC world where they are so common sense indicates we're unlikely to hear much if there's already a problem with the equipment they haven't been able to resolve during this time. Even more reason for London to plug the gap to give us something to take our minds off it! There's no logic to connect the lack of a link to a serious problem though - let's chill a bit, they'll be fine.

  14. hi, a little more reassuring, thanks. however, the contact with last year's expedition to the himalayas was far superior. i understand pictures were posted on the blog as well as detailed information on how they were all doing. it just leaves me wondering why the equipment this year is not providing the same connections?

  15. I think that everybody should bear in mind that this is an adveturous expedition to one of the worlds wild and sparsly populated areas and not a weekend in Snowdonia. Personally speaking i was amazed that we heard anything after Delhi. I work on the principle that no news is good news and I am sure that they are all enjoying a unique mountain environment and a potentially life changing experience.

  16. Thanks Dorothy for your reassurance, however, i do think this information could have been given to us earlier in the week.i'm sure they are all in very good hands but as for most of us parents, it is only natural to worry when there is no contact at all.

  18. Hi, I was a leader on BSES expedition in 88,in the same area and back in those dark ages there was no communication which I still beleive is a good learning experience for both students and family. Please be patient with these technical hitches which can be a nightmare in such remote locations and difficult working conditions. My daughter is presently with BSES in the Amazon, blog working and yes its a real bonus to have that communication, but if it wasn't she would still be having a wonderful experience, I would just have to wait longer to join in with her experiences. Thanks to all in BSES. Good luck to Leo and Sam looking forward to hearing your stories and seeing your slides and maybe reliving some of the experiences I had working with BSES so many years ago.
